Walsall had played two Central League (North West) games ahead of today's fixture, and arrived at the match with three points and a neutral goal difference.

Both Burton and Walsall had goal-scoring opportunities, but it was the Saddlers took the lead after seventy-six minutes of play as trialist Patrick McClean, who remains with the club as Jon Whitney and his side continue to take a look at him, delivered a cross from the left wing which was prodded home by youngster Ashley Maddocks.

There were no further goals in the match as the Saddlers secured all three points.
