On Saturday afternoon, following last weekend's EFL Youth Alliance Cup draw with Shrewsbury Town, Neil Woods' Saddlers returned to Alliance action as they played host to Accrington Stanley at Ray Hall Lane.

Walsall opened the scoring after fourteen minutes of play as Ashley Maddocks headed home from a corner, a nice finish from Maddocks, who had earlier been denied the opening goal by the post.

The visitors equalised swiftly as a Joe Rathbone free-kick looped over Brandon Ganley in the Walsall goal, disappointing for the young Saddlers.

The first-half ended all-square but was full of action as both sides sought to take the lead.

Accrington would go on to take the lead with fifteen minutes of the second-half remaining as Reagan Ogle beat Ganley from the edge of the area. The goal was harsh on the Saddlers,.who had been piling the pressure ahead of the Stanley strike.

Walsall were all over their opponents for much of the remainder of the match as the opposition goal had something of a charmed existence against the Saddlers attack.

The best goal-scoring opportunity fell to Cameron Peters who could only head wide from a William Shorrock corner with six minutes of the game remaining.
