Walsall manager Jon Whitney, who has made nine new signings over the course of the summer, has spoken to the local press and has insisted that he is not surprised at how quickly his new side has gelled.

Speaking via the Express & Star, Jon said; "I’m not surprised at all because I knew I was signing bright players. They are good technically but they are good tactically and they retain information. The really important thing for me against Birmingham was seeing us when we lost the ball. We got back into shape very quickly. That negative work ethic is what is going to stand us out this season."

"We’ve got some very good youngsters coming through so let’s see where the process takes us over the next coming weeks, months and years."
