Walsall Vice Captain Paul Downing has spoken to club journalists following Monday afternoon's televised Sky Bet League 1 victory over Fleetwood Town, and has discussed his first-half goal, which helped the Saddlers earn what could be a crucial a 3-1 victory.

Speaking via Saddlers.co.uk, Paul said; “We worked on set pieces at the training ground on Sunday and it just shows you it pays off. I was really happy to score. It was a great ball in from Fordey and I managed to get across my man and volley it in."

Taunton-born Downing has missed just ONE game over the whole of the 2015/16 campaign (v Morecambe - Johnstone's Paint Trophy R1).

If selected, he will make his 54th appearance of the season on Sunday afternoon as the Saddlers round off the season away to near-rivals Port Vale.

Paul continued; “The way we play and the way we dominate the ball, we always end up having a lot of corners. It’s important we don’t waste them and just run up there thinking we’re not going to score. That’s something Whits has been big on since he got control and we’ve started working on them more and more in training.

“We’ve also done the video analysis of how the opposition set up so it’s a strength we need to keep working on and improving on.”
