As a player, Ward spent the bulk of his career as a forward at Lincoln City where he scored more than 100 goals between 1970 and 1979. He also had spells at Watford, Grimsby Town and Workington.
The 64-year-old brings a wealth of managerial experience, having taken charge of seven different clubs in a coaching career spanning over three decades.
Ward, who won promotion with both Cheltenham and Bristol City, will work closely with first-team coach, Richard O’Kelly, and academy manager, Neil Woods, to develop young players for the senior side.
