On Saturday afternoon Walsall Football Club will make the trip to Roots Hall to take on Southend United in the second Sky Bet League 1 fixture of the season, ahead of matchday Saddlers boss Dean Smith has spoken to the club's official website and has taken a brief look back to the mid-week win over Nottingham Forest.

Speaking to Saddlers.co.uk, Smith said; "We showed great attacking intent on Tuesday night and we’ll go to Roots Hall in the same manner, looking to pick up our first league win of the season.

"We changed system, made a couple of changes and I thought we coped really well. We want to be a threat to teams and it’s something we’ve been working on throughout per-season. To score four goals against a Championship side shows what we’re capable of.

"We had to be hard to beat on the road last season and we still have to be this season but I feel we have players who can do some damage at the other end of the pitch.

"That said I’m expecting a really tough game against Southend United. We saw first hand last season in the cup what a challenge it is to go there and win. We managed to beat them but we were under an awful lot of pressure in the second half.

"Phil Brown has done a terrific job there. He’s got the credentials of a top-level manager with bags of experience. He’s strengthened in a lot of areas, bought in some good players and have a lot of firepower as a club so it’s going to be a tough game, we know that but it’s one we’re looking forward to.

"They gave Brighton a game on Tuesday and were the better side in the second half so that tells you straight away we’re going to be in for a good game.

"We play Saturday and Tuesday games for the first month of the season and I’m in a position where I can plan ahead in terms of our selection.

"We’ve got a fit squad and players pushing each other for starting places so it’s going to help us during this busy period in the year."
