The head of Walsall Football Club's Medical Department, Jon Whitney, has this weekend collected the Football Medical Association's League 1 Physio of the Year award at the organisations inaugural conference, which was held in the Radisson Blu Hotel at East Midlands Airport.

Whitney, a former pro who played for clubs such as Huddersfield Town, Wigan Athletic, Lincoln City and Hull City, joined the Saddlers in December 2003 after injury put an end to his playing career, and has gone on to be a major player within the club's inner structure, which includes assisting then Caretaker Manager Dean Smith following the departure of manager Chris Hutchings and assistant and Martin O'Connor.
