Walsall manager Dean Smith has spoken to the press following Tuesday evening's Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash with Preston North End, and has revealed that he had been hoping to bring an end to Chairman Jeff Bonser's exile, which has seen him miss almost five years of home games.

Speaking to the Express & Star, Smith said; “I’m over the moon for the chairman. He was not there on Tuesday, he did not want to take the focus off the players. I had been trying to get him to come.

“He has been integral to everything which goes on here.”
