Walsall Football Club vice-Captain Paul Downing has spoken to the club's official website following Tuesday evening's dramatic 'Sudden Death' penalty shootout victory over Tranmere Rovers in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, and has joined Richard O'Donnell in praising the Saddlers' travelling support.

Speaking to Saddlers.co.uk, Paul said; “We were in control of the game early on. So to go in two goals down at the break was really disappointing.

“But the Gaffer gave a good team talk and we came out full of belief at the start of the second half.

“We wanted to win it in 90 minutes, of course, but we got back into it with two great goals and then thankfully we were able to finish the job on penalties.

“It all happened really quickly and before I knew it we were into sudden death and it was my turn! I knew where I was going to put it because I’d practised penalties in training the day before, so I stuck to it and it was great to see the ball hit the back of the net.

“We had a great away following and it was nice to be able to celebrate with the fans at the end. We’re delighted to get through and it’s a massive opportunity for us to get into the history books.

“We know we have to keep working hard, though; we fancy ourselves against anyone over two legs and these are exciting times for the club.

“It’s about doing the right things and seeing where it takes us.”
