Walsall manager Dean Smith met with the press following Saturday afternoon's FA Cup First Round draw with near rivals Shrewsbury Town, and has hailed his sides character as they came back to secure a replay.

Speaking to saddlers.co.uk, Smith said; "I felt that we were the better team over the 90 minutes. We conceded an early goal, which was disappointing, but we took the game to them after that.

"We could have done a bit better in the final third, but we deservedly got ourselves back into the game. It would have been a travesty had we not been in the second round draw.

"We know that we can be better than we were today, but overall we were the better side out there. The players showed a lot of character as well as urgency and energy.

"It was nice to see Tom Bradshaw bag a brace; he works really hard and is a level-headed lad. He was shackled well in the first half but good players persevere and he certainly did that out there."
