PAPER TALK: SMITH - INJURIES ARE NO EXCUSE

Walsall manager Dean Smith spoke to the press following yesterday afternoon's disappointing Sky Bet League One defeat to Oldham Athletic, but has insisted the club's current injury issues are no excuse for poor performance.

Walsall manager Dean Smith spoke to the press following yesterday afternoon's disappointing Sky Bet League One defeat to Oldham Athletic, but has insisted the club's current injury issues are no excuse for poor performance.

Speaking to the Walsall Advertiser, Dean said; “We've got number eight, nine and ten out of the team at the moment who are all very good players and any team at this level would miss those sort of players.

“But that’s no excuse for losing the game at Oldham. We still feel that we've got a good enough squad that can compete.

“We started well first 15 minutes and did well the last 15 after they scored their second but in between there was too much huffing and puffing and we looked like we were carrying a few lads in that period.

“Jordan Cook took his goal well and looked a threat but after we scored the goal, for whatever reason, we seemed to step off it.

“I was disappointed with some of the performances and I’m sure the players will be as well.”
