Yesterday afternoon it was revealed that former Birmingham City, Hull City and Gillingham striker Craig Fagan had joined Walsall on trial, and was to make an appearance during the Saddlers' Final Third Development League Cup match away to Port Vale.

Today, Walsall manager Dean Smith has sought to clarity the situation, speaking to the Express & Star, Smith said; “I got a phone call from Craig asking if he could come in and train with us because he lives locally. It gives him a chance to do a couple of week’s worth of work with us and, if he takes our breath away, who knows?

“There is no money involved, he is a good lad and I have known him a while.”
