Walsall Football Club defender and vice Captain Paul Downing has spoken to the club's official website about last weekend's 0-0 draw with Gillingham, and has also discussed the positives that can be taken from the season so-far.

Speaking to saddlers.co.uk, Paul said: "We owed it to ourselves after Tuesday to bounce back in the right way. I felt that, to a man, we put in a shift and got our rewards with a clean sheet.

“It was a game of few chances, to be fair; we know that they are a good side who have started the season well, particularly at home, but we are pleased with the point and hopefully will push on from here.

“It’s about maintaining these standards and finding a level of consistency. We've kept four clean sheets already this season, so that is encouraging for us.

“Saturday’s game was about getting back to basics and doing what we are good at. I know that I was poor in the last game, but I feel that I have showed a strong mental character."
