In the latest of his regular columns, Scott Brotherton takes a look at the situation surrounding former Walsall captain, and two-time Player of the Season Andy Butler, and considers what impact his return could have.

When Andy Butler left the Banks's for Sheffield United in the summer it seemed inconceivable that he would ever return.

As far as most were concerned he would be just as vital for the Blades as he was for Dean Smith. But it hasn't panned out that way.

At 30 years of age, Butler reportedly moved to Sheffield to be closer to his family. The round trip to Walsall wasn't exactly practical, and it looked as if this was the perfect solution.

However things really haven't worked out for him back in Yorkshire. A training ground bust-up with Blades boss Nigel Clough has led to Butler making a lot fewer appearances than most we're anticipating.

Clough also couldn't have foreseen the rise of young centre-half Harrison McGahey. The 18-year-old has come out of nowhere much like the Saddlers' Liam Kinsella, who no one could've predicted would have figured so frequently either

Due to his lack of football a loan back to Walsall was the only real option, and an exciting one at that. It means a return to the tried and tested back four that conceded only a goal a game last season.

The problem with Butler's departure was our lack of a ready-made replacement. James Chambers filled in but that just left a gap at right-back. We are lucky Kinsella came along when he did with all the injuries in that area of the pitch.

Unlike most former players, Andy should be welcomed back with open arms by the supporters. He is definitely on the cusp of legend status in the Saddlers' modern era and a firm fans favourite.

Our current defence has only let in five in six, but that said they haven't looked too convincing. Now that Bonser has stumped up the money for Butler's considerable wages that should be one problem solved.

Now we can concentrate on the lack of firepower at the other end...
