This coming Tuesday, Walsall Football Club make the journey to Roots Hall to take on Sky Bet League Two outfit Southend United, in the First Round of this season's Capital One Cup.

Walsall head into the game on the back of an opening day draw with Port Vale, Walsall débutante Tom Bradshaw's goal rescuing a point for the Reds following Tom Pope's first-half opener.

Southend arrive at the game following an opening day victory over James Beattie's Accrington Stanley, a Lee Barnard penalty sealing all three points for the Shrimpers.

Neither side have any fresh injury issues following the weekend fixtures, it remains to be seen whether Walsall manager Dean Smith will give new signing Billy Clifford his first start, the former Chelsea midfielder had to settle for a second-half substitute appearance at the weekend.



Fellow Saddlers midfielder Sam Mantom may be set for a place on the bench after missing out at the weekend.

The Saddlers have won just three of their previous meetings with Southend, one in the last five. The last cup meeting between the two took place at Fellows Park on 30th January 1990, a Leyland DAF Cup, Quarter Final (South) match which the Saddlers won 4-1.

In terms of head-to-head, Southend hold a large advantage, with thirty-nine wins, to the Saddlers twenty-one, there have also been seventeen draws between the two.

The sides' first encounter came on 29th October 1927, United emerging victorious 1-0 in front of 7,897 at the Kursaal.

Tuesday's referee is scheduled to be Mr. Gavin Ward, who is based in Surrey. Adrian Sannerude and Ashley Slaughter are set to be assisting, whilst the Fourth Official will be Nicholas Cooper.
