SMITH DISCUSSES CAIN'S SOCIAL MEDIA OUTBURST

Walsall manager Dean Smith has spoken to the press ahead of this weekend's Sky Bet League 1 clash with Chesterfield, and has discussed on-loan Leicester City midfielder Michael Cain, who took to Twitter and Facebook to vent his frustrations at not being selected for the Saddlers' Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final defeat to Bristol City.

Speaking to the Walsall Advertiser, Smith said; "I spoke to him today and he's come in and apologised to the players for what he put out there because he agreed it was something that shouldn't have gone out there and he should have come and spoken to me about it.

"I've sat down with him and explained my reasons (for leaving him out). I explained them on Saturday evening as well but it's hard for a young kid to take in what you are saying at a time like that.

"He never got on the pitch as well which was disappointing for him but we were two goals down then and I had to go and try to chase the game with people who I thought could go on and change it and score goals. It doesn't take away from the good work that he's done here.

"He's a 19/20-year-old kid and I'm not going to hold that against him. He's a really good lad and I've got a lot of time for him.

"I saw it as an act of immaturity. He was emotional after the game and he had played a big part in helping us get there.

"I said to him that I didn't expect him to apologise to me. I understand the emotions but there were other teammates who were disappointed at not playing as well.

"He's turned up to training today and trained really well. He's been a very good player for us and I'm sure he will continue to be so until the end of the season.

"I had to pick a team that I thought would go and win the game. Unfortunately, Michael not trained for six or seven days previous to the Sheffield United game last Tuesday because of the illness he had suffered the week before.

"He was only two or three days into training so I had the decision between him and Sam – and Sam had done well in the two games he had played. He'd had no repercussions or tiredness."
