Earlier today Walsall Football Club travelled to the Proact Stadium to take on Chesterfield in the latest Sky Bet League 1 fixture of the season. We were in attendance and we share our match report below.

As the game got underway it was the home-side that had the first opportunity through a free kick, it was taken short to O'Shea - who could only send it high and wide.

Walsall's first chance of the game came through an Anthony Forde corner, the flag kick awarded after good wing play from Andy Taylor, the ball was played in but cleared by Ian Evatt.

The Spireites broke clear and were awarded a free kick outside the Walsall area, this was taken but looked to be caught by the swirling wind as it went well wide of o'Donnell's goal.

Later, Banks scored from a Roberts cross, however he had fouled his marker during the build up and has his goal ruled out.

James Chambers was alert to clear a cross as the home sides settled on the ball. Talbot looking to have more say in the game.

With just under fifteen minutes gone; Anthony Forde dragged a shot wide as the home defence stood strong, this will count as the first shot on goal...

Chesterfield won a corner after good play from Roberts and Talbot, Banks' ball in looked to evade all the heads including a leaping O'Shea, as Walsall are awarded a goal kick.

The home side won another corner soon after, good wing play again the reason for the flag kick, Sam Mantom rose highest to clear the danger.

Chesterfield regained possession and Banks then headed a Talbot cross over the bar as the home side looked to take the lead.

Walsall's Jordan Cook moved well and turned his man which allowed him to shoot just wide of goal from the edge of the area.

Roberts sent in a left-footed free kick as the home side continued to enjoy much of the ball, the Saddlers defence cleared ahead of Talbot who looked to be the target of the cross.

Another Roberts cross is sent in and is caught by the wind as it heads towards goal, O'Donnell pushes it away and collides with the post, he looked to recover quickly and showed no ill affects.

Back at the other end Jordan Cook and Jordy Hiwula looked to play a one-two but the home defence was alert to clear the danger as Cook broke into the box.

Soon after Anthony Forde broke free and sent a drive over the bar with the defence backtracking.

Good play from Jordy Hiwula nearly allowed James Baxendale in but the defence clear before Jordy can get the ball away.

Morsy was the next to try a shot from distance, O'Donnell not tested as the ball was easily gathered.

Evatt and Clucas combine well down the wing but the ball in is met by open space as no-one gambled on the pass.

Clucas was then the target of a Darikwa cross, the ball just too deep as it evades his toe and goes for a throw in.

Banks tried his luck with a ball aimed for Clucas, once again he is unable to control the pass as Walsall clear.

Morsy and Banks again combined to send in a cross as Walsall failed to deal with the pressure out wide, luckily the box was once again empty.

Chesterfield won a corner with a few minutes of the half remaining, James Chambers alert to head it over the bar. The following flag kick was headed out by O'Connor as the ball back in was also cleared.

As we entered stoppage time Jordy Hiwula rose well to head a Ben Purkiss cross just wide of goal.

As the second half got underway Walsall had an early break as Baxendale sent a rising shot over the bar.

Banks broke into the box but had his attack quelled by a tough O'Connor tackle, he received treatment and was OK to continue.

Jimmy Ryan was booked for a poor tackle on Jordan Cook. He was soon involved in the action again as he won a corner, Evatt rose highest for the flag kick but sent it wide.

The home-side won another corner, Banks' ball was initially cleared but Banks sent the ball back in as Hird strikes against his marker for another corner. The second flag kick was again headed out.

Later, O'Shea sent in a deep cross that ended up behind goal, referee Kevin Friend awarded a corner with Baxendale in attendance, the Saddlers cleared the resulting corner but remained under much pressure.

Just after the hour mark, Walsall made a double change as Mal Benning and Michael Cain replaced James Baxendale and Anthony Forde. The home-side also made a change as Ariyibi replaced the busy Banks.

Ariyibi was immediately involved as he sent in a dangerous cross which was cleared by James Chambers, the resulting corner was cleared.

Purkiss, Benning and Mantom combined to create a chance for Mal who could only send his shot over the bar.

Later on, Walsall won a corner, which Mal Benning took, the ball was sent in via Ben Purkiss and headed onto the bar by a rising James Chambers, the ball was again cleared for another corner, this was less dangerous and eventually cleared.

With seventy minutes on the clock Chesterfield made a double change as Mani Dieseruvwe and Harrison replaced O'Shea and Roberts.

Mani and Harrison were almost through early into their game but were edged off the ball as Walsall cleared before the combination could bear fruit.

Chestefield won another corner as they continued to be on top, Ryan sent the ball in but this was flicked on and cleared. Clucas sent the ball in but Mani couldn't gather as it goes wide.

Ryan was then caught offside following some good wide play.

With under ten minutes to go Adam Chambers was replaced by Reece Flanagan. As soon as the change was made Jordy Hiwula broke free following a good over-the-top pass from Purkiss, sadly the Manchester City man could only find the side-netting.

With less than five minutes remaining the Spireites won a corner, Ryan took the flag kick towards the back post Sam Hird rose above his marker and headed home to give his side the lead.

Late on Walsall were awarded a free kick which Reece Flanagan took early with no-one really available.

Just before we entered four minutes of added-on time, Andy Taylor sent in a late cross but this was easily gathered with all available players being marked well.

Mal Benning was felled by substitute Ariyibi, resulting in a Saddlers free kick, this was again wasted by a below par Saddlers side.

Walsall were unable to get the ball into the right positions as the referee blew for full time.
