Next Walsall Manager: Early Odds as the Search Begins

There is already plenty of speculation as to who will be the next to join the club.

As the club begins the search for yet another first-team Head Coach, the oddsmakers have begun to ponder who will be the man to replace Matthew Taylor in the dugout at Banks's Stadium.

Taylor was sacked after his side suffered their seventh defeat in as many games, with Tuesday's defeat to Scunthorpe United proving to be his final game in charge, and is just the latest in a long line of managers unable to make a positive impact in WS1.

Current interim manager Neil McDonald, who will be joined by Mat Sadler in taking charge in the short-term, is currently available at odds of 6/1, whilst Sadler can be backed at 20/1.

Outside of current club employees, former Ipswich Town and Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook is at 8/1, with Kidderminster Harriers gaffer Russ Penn, who saw his side take West Ham United to extra time in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, joining him at 8/1.

Former Newport County boss Michael Flynn in at 10/1 alongside Ian Holloway, who has frequently been liked with a switch to the Saddlers.

John McGreal and John Askey, who were among the early favourites to replace former Saddlers boss Darrell Clarke, can be found with odds of 12/1.

Elsewhere, former Walsall midfielder and manager Dean Keates, who is out of work after a failed return to Wrexham, also comes in at 12/1, whilst former Shrewsbury Town man Sam Ricketts, Marc Bircham, and Warren Joyce are all at 14/1.

Ex-Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace midfielder Shaun Derry is among a host of potential managers ranked at 16/1 with Paul Simpson, David Dunn, Steve Evans, Russell Slade and former Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and England defender Sol Campbell just a few of the options available.

Chris Powell, a man linked with the club before Taylor was appointed, can be backed with odds of 20/1, alongside the likes of Kevin Nolan, Mark Sampson, Colin Calderwood, Harry Kewell, and Neil Warnock.
