Walsall News and Views

Following a duo of away-days the Saddlers return to Banks's Stadium this weekend where they will face Keith Curle's promotion-chasing Northampton Town in a bid to stretch their undefeated spell to three games.

Arriving at the clash on the back of a drab midweek draw with Newport County - which saw the Saddlers fail to hit a single shot on target - Darrell Clarke's side have an opportunity to return to the top half of the table.

With relegation the other side of a collapse of unrivalled proportions, the Reds can now concentrate upon securing a place in mid-table whilst holding on to an outside chance of sneaking into the Play-Of places.

Hopefully the manager will be able to select a side capable of troubling the opposition 'keeper as they could do with a win in front of the home faithful with the majority of their wins coming on the road so far this season.

Opposition News

Keith Curle's side will arrive at this weekend's clash on the back of a duo of defeats as both Port Vale and Swindon Town have been able to take maximum points by netting just one goal apiece.

The Cobblers had gone seven league games undefeated before a David Worrall goal saw Port Vale home to victory at Sixfields, and they will no doubt be keen to return to winning ways as they make the trip to the Black Country this weekend.

Head to Head

Walsall and Northampton Town have met on eighty-three previous occasions and it's the Saddlers who hold an narrow overall win/ loss lead having secured victory on thirty-five occasions compared to the Cobblers' thirty-two.

There have also been sixteen draws over the history of the fixture, a history which began at the the County Ground on Saturday, 5th November 1927 as the two sides met in a Division Three (South) clash which Northampton would win by ten-goals-to-nil.

The Saddlers secured their first ever win over the Cobblers just over a year after their first meeting as the two sides clashed on Christmas Day, Tuesday, 25th December 1928, with Walsall winning by four-goals-to-three.

Walsall have won five of the last seven meetings between the two sides including the most recent meeting, which took place at Sixfields on Saturday, 3rd August 2019 and saw James Clarke grab the game's only goal to secure three welcome points for the Saddlers.

The Man in the Middle

We now know that Ben Toner, who is based in Lancashire, will be the man in the middle with Andrew Dallison and Ian Dudley being named as assistant referees, whilst Ravel Cheosiaua will now act as Fourth Official.
