Nicky Devlin: "We Have All Got to Stick Together"

Walsall defender Nicky Devlin has spoken to club journalists following Saturday's disappointing League One defeat to Doncaster Rovers, which saw the Saddlers suffer their first league defeat of the season, and insisted that that result has to be left in the past as the most important thing is how the team reacts when they face Oxford United next weekend.
The Saddlers were defeated by four-goals-to-one in a tense match which saw a series of controversial refereeing decisions frustrate players, club officials and supporters as the strong unbeaten start to the season was brought to an end as goals from John Marquis (PEN), Mallik Wilks, James Coppinger, and Matty Blair, cancelled out Morgan Ferrier's opener to secure all-three points for the visiting side.

24-year-old Devlin sought to reassure supporters that he and his teammates will be doing all they can to get back to winning ways next weekend and will leave no stone unturned as they return to training in preparation for their visit to the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.

Speaking via the club's official website - Saddlers.co.uk - Nicky said; "To say we had a bad day at the office was a bit of an understatement. Everyone from the goalkeeper to the strikers, every single player was below par. In this league, against a team that is doing well, that just isn’t going to cut it.

"We were punished by the better team. Doncaster came here and played really well, especially in the first half. We have now got to dust ourselves down and be ready for next Saturday.

"We weren’t as dominant as we have been in previous games and we let Doncaster come here and play, which we haven’t done so far and we can’t afford to do. It was one of those days, everything just went wrong and it’s now about how we react.

"We hadn’t had a defeat in the league before, so it is all about how we bounce back. There were a lot of boys in the dressing room who were unhappy and hurting but it has to hurt.

"Too many times last year we lost games and it was maybe just an acceptance, but there doesn’t seem like there is going to be an acceptance this year. Under the gaffer that isn’t going to be allowed to happen.

"We have all got to stick together, have another good week’s training and we will go to Oxford looking to bounce back."
