9:41 pm Tuesday, 5 December 2017
John Ward's Walsall Development side made the trip to Butlin Road and took on Rugby Town in the Second Round of the Birmingham Senior Cup.
Walsall's development side were back in action on Tuesday evening when they made the trip to Butlin Road where they faced Rugby Town in the Second Round of this season's Birmingham Senior Cup. Here is our brief match update.

Rugby Town XI | Cooper; Print, Harris, Dance, Kelly, Ruff, Belcher, Ashby, Holloway, Kolodynski; Wiggins-Thomas
Walsall XI | Ganley; Devlin, Vann, Shorrock, Tonks, Oliver, Kendrick, Cuvelier, Hayles-Docherty, Peters, Candlin

Substitutes | Nolan, O'Sullivan, Massamba, Ruddock

The Saddlers reached the Second Round with a 3-2 victory over Lye Town. Goals from Reece Flanagan, Maziar Kouhyar and Kacy-Milan Butterfield seeing the side safely through to the next stage.

Rugby defeated AFC Wulfrunians by four-goals-to-two to secure their place in the Second Round and will be keen to cause an upset this evening as they look to reach the latter stages of the competition.

John Ward named a strong starting line-up with first-teamers Nicky Devlin and Florent Cuvelier playing alongside up-and-comers Will Shorrock, Tobias Hayles-Docherty and Mitchel Candlin.

The first goal of the game arrived just after the half-hour mark as The Valley finished off a dangerous attack with David Kolodynski bundling the ball over the line following Aiden Print's right-wing cross.

The Saddlers' equaliser didn't arrive until five minutes into the second-half as Cameron Peters beat the trap to go one-on-one with Valley goalkeeper Niall Cooper, before slotting the ball into the back of the net.

Walsall went on to grab the lead twenty minutes later as unfortunate Rugby defender Brad Harris sent the ball over his own line following a combination of Mitchel Candlin's post-bound effort and Florent Cuvelier's follow-up strike which he in turn guided over the line. A disappointing goal for our hosts as time continued to tick away.

Walsall would add to their lead seven minutes later as young winger Tobias Hayles-Docherty found the bottom corner of the goal with a sweetly struck effort from the edge of the area. Some fine build up play from Nicky Devlin to create the opening.

There were no further goals as John Ward's side secured their place in the next round. We'll have details of the draw on our website and social media accounts as soon as the draw is made.
