Whitney Praise for 'Outstanding' Kory Roberts

Walsall manager Jon Whitney has praised 19-year-old central defender Kory Roberts for his Man of the Match winning performance against league leaders Shrewsbury Town.
Walsall manager Jon Whitney has spoken to the local press following Saturday afternoon's one-all draw with league leaders Shrewsbury Town, and praised central defender Kory Roberts - likening the 19-year-old to former Saddler Scott Dann.

Jon, who was speaking via the Express & Star, said; "I thought Kory was outstanding against Shrewsbury. He’s grown in stature again. The biggest thing is that he listens to criticism really well and he learns quickly - and he cares.

"He’s very driven. Only three years ago he was playing college football in Birmingham. I think Martin O’Connor recommended him to us. He came late into football so he’s not been through the academy.

"He’s learning his trade while playing in League One which is a credit to the kid but it’s his attitude why I put him in. He doesn’t shy away from anything and even after mistakes he then steps forward and takes responsibility and improves.

"He’s got a knack of being in the right place and reading the game well and that’s what good defenders do. Scotty Dann was a really good example of that. You don’t always have to be lightning quick – if you read the game as a defender, that is a really good skill."
