RESERVES REPORT: WALSALL 3 WIGAN ATHLETIC 0

Earlier today, Walsall Football Club's Reserves side played host to Wigan Athletic Reserves in the latest Final Third Development League (West) fixture of the season.
Earlier today, Walsall Football Club's Reserves side played host to Wigan Athletic Reserves in the latest Final Third Development League (West) fixture of the season.

This match was Walsall's eighth league game of the season, with the Saddlers sitting in fourth place ahead of kick off.

The Latics, who sat top of the table ahead of kick off, were just one victory away from securing the Final Third Development League (West) crown.

Wigan enjoyed a good spell of possession to begin the game, Walsall's MacGillivray being called into action from two Cosgrove crosses, and a well placed free kick from Flores.

Walsall's first chance of the game fell to Tevin Shakespeare, the striker turning on the edge of the area and volleying over the bar.

Later the Saddlers were awarded a free kick, Cvetkovic fouling Mal Benning. Kyle Rowley met Luke Delaney's kick, but could only send his header wide of goal at the back post.

Walsall's chances continued as striker Levi Rowley headed wide of goal following a cross from his brother Kyle.

Walsall took the lead after some encouraging Levi Rowley play down the left wing allowed Luke Delaney to score at the back post.

The Saddlers doubled their advantage soon after, Luke Delaney's ball into the box was met by Matt Preston, who headed home.

The Saddlers grew in confidence and began to pass the ball around well. Levi Rowley also fired wide following a Jordan Murphy cross, with the Latics backing off.

Craig MacGillivray was alert to save from Robles. Craig also saved well from a Flores free kick, his ball in sent towards goal by a Joey Johnson header.

The Walsall 'keeper continued with his solid display as he saves well from Robles during a one-on-one situation.

With around ten minutes of the half remaining, Wigan were awarded a free kick as Cvetkovic is fouled out wide. The kick was taken short and miss-controlled as Walsall scrambled clear.

Wigan's Flores went into the book for a bad foul on Liam Kinsella, midfielder Reece Flanagan reacted with fury to the foul.

The Latics had the first chance of the half as Declan Poole sees his shot deflected wide.

Cosgrove also had a shot saved, the resulting corner, which found Chow was also deflected wide for another flag kick, this was easily cleared.

Wigan 'keeper Connor Keane was alert to save from a superb Levi Rowley long-distance effort.

Robles was again denied by MacGillivray following good play from Declan Poole. Baxendale was bought on for Flores.

Walsall extended their lead after around seventy minutes. Midfield man Luke Delaney sending a low shot thet bobbled over the 'keeper.

Soon after Wigan's Declan Poole was sent off for a foul on Reece Flanagan as the Latics seemed to capitulate. Flanagan was also booked during the incident.

Flanagan was again involved in the action as he unleashed a 40 yard drive onto the Latics' post with the stopper stranded.

With less than ten minutes remaining the Saddlers made a triple change with Owen, Probert and Kouhyar replacing Kyle Rowley, double goal-scorer Delaney and Levi Rowley.

Matt Preston added his name into the referee's book as he kicked the ball away in frustration.
